PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WCTV) – Congressman Neal Dunn is pitching North Florida for the location of online retail giant Amazon’s new headquarters.

This week, the company canceled plans to locate one of its two new headquarters in New York City.

Dunn says Panama City and Tallahassee would be prime locations for the company.

"I believe that you would find competitively priced real estate located in close proximity to major airports, railroad lines, interstates, or deep water ports like the Port of Panama City an excellent choice for HQ2," Dunn wrote in a letter to Amazon’s Chief Executive, Jeff Bezos.

The letter goes on to mention Verizon’s investment to make Panama City one of two 5G-capable cities east of the Mississippi.

"I am sure you will agree the people that I represent are among the most hard working and resilient in the United States," Dunn writes.

The Amazon headquarters promises to bring 25,000 jobs. Dozens of communities courted the company to locate there, before Amazon chose New York along with the Washington DC area. Then, this week the New York deal fell through, after some leaders balked at huge tax incentives offered to the company.

The Florida Panhandle is reeling in the wake of Hurricane Michael, which caused billions of dollars in damage.

"Florida’s panhandle needs help now… it’s been four months since Hurricane Michael and much of the panhandle is still in ruins, with people living in tents and surviving on the bare essentials," Dunn said in calling for more disaster aid.
